About That Alcan Highway, Part II (July 25 - August 1)

Dear Family and Friends,

On Friday, July 26th our tour group hopped on a bus for a tour of Whitehorse. Whitehorse is the capitol of the Yukon Territory and has a population of 27,000 people. During the gold rush days this town was the gateway for getting goods up to Dawson City on the Yukon River. Paddle boats were used for this endeavor. Below are pictures of our site at Pioneer RV (we are packed in tight for three days) and views of the Yukon River and the SS Klondike. Additionally a picture of bald headed eagles (the three in the picture are ready to flee the nest) was snapped along the tour.

A map of our two month odyssey.
A very tight site at the RV park

The view out of our front window. The RV sites are very narrow in Yukon Territory.

From Whitehorse we left the Alcan Highway and drove to Dawson City (336 miles). Dawson City is the home of the Klondike Gold Rush. Besides the stampeders (gold rushers), there were others that left their mark on this town. Think of Robert Service (The Cremation of Sam Mc Gee) and Jack London (Call of the Wild and other books) who lived in the area and wrote wonderful poems and stories about the Yukon.
On July 30 (Day 23 of the trip) we drove the RV onto the ferry and crossed the Yukon River and drove on  The Top of the World road to Chicken, Alaska. This was a two day trip that found us spending the night with six other members of our tour at the 50 mile point on the road. We crossed the US Border the next day and spent the night in Chicken (early settlers could not spell the name Ptarmigan (this bird is still found in the area) so they called it Chicken. The population is 7 in the winter and 29 in the summer. Along the  road we saw our first herds of caribou. On August 1 (Day 25) we drove into Tok, Alaska.

I have had problems loading pictures in Tok so I will try to include them in the next blog. Tomorrow we leave for Valdez, Alaska. Thank you for checking in with us as we explore this fascinating area of North America.
